Frequently Asked Questions
What makes a good thesis statement?+
A strong thesis is specific (not vague), arguable (not just a fact), concise (one or two sentences), and clearly states your position and the main reasons supporting it.
Where does the thesis statement go?+
The thesis statement typically goes at the end of your introduction paragraph, usually as the last sentence before the body paragraphs begin.
Can my thesis change during writing?+
Yes, it is normal to refine your thesis as you research and write. Your final thesis should reflect the argument you actually make in the paper.
How long should a thesis statement be?+
A thesis statement is typically one to two sentences long. Avoid writing a thesis that is a paragraph — keep it focused and specific.
Should a thesis statement be a question?+
No, a thesis statement should be a declarative statement that makes a claim, not a question. However, a question can help you formulate your thesis.
